Whilst Riesling is no doubt the king white grape for the region, very luxurious Shiraz with soft palates and Cabernet Sauvignons are produced there too. Fruit is sourced from a vineyard over 35 years old. Margaret River is the name of a river, town and key wine region. In the white wines, Chardonnays of vast depth and character, new Semillon Sauvignon Blanca blends are the main varietals the region is famous for. At the time the region was the southernmost region in the country, but nowadays Central Otago takes south to a complete new level. The region has a maritime climate and is most renowned for producing rich, ripe smooth Shiraz with numerous power and complexity. These wines can be supremely rich and intricate and typically warrant 510 years in the cellar for superior results. The famous red wine Chianti is based on the Sangiovese variety, though is maximum commonly blended with Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon.
