Thales's wealthy history goes back well over a century. Here are some of the highlights from the story so far. CF was founded in 1918 and became a pioneer in broadcasting. The company receives its beginning major export contracts in the Middle East, behind the 1973 and 1979 oil crises. Despite the inflow of revenues from the first major contracts with the Gulf States, debt remains high. The company divests heavily in courteous telecommunications (1983 agreement with GE) and medical imaging (sold to General Electric in 1987). Financial performance also benefits from the finance activities developed in house from 1984 to manage cash flows from major export contracts. A proactive policy of external growth is adopted, mainly in Europe, with the acquisition of the defense electronics businesses of the Philips group in 1989. The other major operation is the acquisition of a controlling interest in Sextant Avionique (formed through the merger of the avionics businesses of ThomsonCSF and Aerospatiale). Several other acquisitions, large and small, significantly magnify the Group's industrial bottom outside France, mainly in Europe. The capital gains are impaired to finance further international growth. This agreement enables ThomsonCSF to strengthen its scope of business, consolidate its market positions in defense and industrial electronics, and magnify its industrial presence in Europe, particularly in Germany, Italy and Norway. Its defense, information technology and services businesses are expanded. These acquisitions as well as inside growth radically alter the Group's portfolio of businesses. In line with this strategic focus, a new organization with three business areas' defense, aerospace and information technology and services (ITS) is introduced in July. The new structure is designed overhead all to leverage the Group's dual technology expertise, focus its strategic development in polite markets on businesses with genuine synergies with the Group's proven defense and aerospace competencies, and enable the Group to earnings leadership positions in those markets. Thales pursues its multidomestic development policy, acquires stuffed oversee of several defences and aerospace subsidiaries originally held through joint ventures. Thales UK, now Britain's second largest defense contractor, is selected for a number of major Ministry of defense programmed, including the CF tomorrow aircraft carriers. The Group continues to divest nonstrategic courteous businesses and to consolidate and structure its capabilities in the expanding polite security market, particularly through its Thales SHIELD initiative. The Fresh Thales is bigger and stronger than earlier with increased revenues, more employees and the arrival of new and complementary skills, making Thales a major world player with notable technological capabilities and leader in mission critical information systems serving three markets: defense, Aerospace, and Security. This alliance strengthens and secures Thales's naval credentials both on key European programmed and on a number of major export contracts.
