University in Sydney, Club in Sydney

Self serve tea and coffee, available in the hangar Room, are included in all prices. We calm bear that agreeable oasis within the city that James MacArthur sought to create back in 1857. Our former is memorable but our coming is even brighter. With James MacArthur (17981867), son of famed pioneers John and Elizabeth MacArthur, as its beginning President, the club grew quickly and acquired a important Georgian mansion in Bligh Street (designed by Francis Green way) accessible to Parliament and to the then financial center of the town. With its eminent membership, ambitious event calendar and gardens as an oasis within the city, the Club was a favorite among country and international visitors alike. This building with its distinctive curved brickwork shape was the last of the purpose built city clubhouses in Australia. It mirrored same clubs established in London and Fresh York and in time, it's premature members rose to become prime ministers, university chancellors and the leading judges, lawyers and doctors in the land. In 1930, the University Club moved to a fresh clubhouse at 70 Phillip Street with a baroque facade and Florentine interior that would become the subject of a conservation controversy some fifty years later. Rebuilt in the mid1980s as part of an office redevelopment, the facilities at Phillip Street now house a important health center with heated swimming pool, specialist exercise rooms and squash courts for members and their guests. During the last thirty years, all city clubs have struggled with the challenges of social change and geographic relocation of professional life across the wider Sydney area. Many closed, but others elected to embrace the tomorrow through amalgamations. Two such clubs now form portion of our Bent Street family and our long name. The Sydney Club was founded in 1912 (originally as the Millions Club) in bohemian Rowe Street with the civic purpose of promoting British migration and with developing an influential public speaker program. The Bent Street family was made whole in 2007 when the neighboring University and Schools and the Union clubs agreed to join to bear a strategic combine of resources. This synergy has enabled members enjoy an enviable range and depth of facilities and services in the center of the City of Sydney: Excellent accommodation for city and country members, their guests and members of reciprocal clubs. A remarkable collection of art, furniture and antiques. In house recreational and health center facilities with trained staff to assist. A discreet business center within the club for the convenience of members and visitors. Appointed Governor in October 2014, His Excellency maintains a continuing expansive interest in the arts and in sport, as healthy as supporting organizations that encourage inclusiveness, diversity and energetic citizenship. His Excellency married Linda McMartin, a Sydney born primary school teacher in 1977. She has been a keen community worker with Canberra Hospital and with MealsonWheels and is an enthusiast for choirs and singing.
