Over the former 50 years, WW has grown into the largest and maximum influential autonomous conservation organization in the world. Today, we're the nation's largest conservation organization, with more than 500,00 supporters and projects underway throughout Australia and the Oceania region. WW (known then as World Wildlife Fund) was born in the small town of Borges, Switzerland, and registered as a charity in the UK. WW and the IUCN established TRAFFIC Oceania to monitor wildlife and aid agencies in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific to curb the illegal trade in wildlife and wildlife products. The network worked cooperatively with government and community groups to empower people to participate in all aspects of species conservation. The first WW Living Planet Report was published, showing human pressures on the planet and their impact on vertebrate animals. WWFAustralia played a major role in creating the world’s most far reaching biodiversity conservation laws, the Environment Care and Biodiversity Conservation (epic) Act of June 199. Due to confusion and translation discrepancies across more than 15 languages, the acronym WW was adopted as our name globally. WW brought together a consortium of partners to thrive a plan to guard and manage the biodiversity of the whole Southwest Australia region, which is home to almost 7,00 species of plants, almost half which occur nowhere else. After public campaigning and pressure from WW, the Australian Government committed to elevate concern for the Vast Barrier Reef from 4.6 to 33, offering relief from coral bleaching, sea floor trawling, over fishing and pollution. The island was finally declared pest release in 2014. WW ensured nearly one million hectares were put below certified sustainable forestry management in Borneo, providing a critical refuge for endangered orangutans.
